Interviewing for your dream internship: interview practice tips

Interviewing for an internship abroad can be daunting. But with a little bit of preparation, you can land the internship of your dreams for the perfect Erasmus+ experience! Here are four tips to get you started.

1. Research the country and culture.
   Before your interview, it is essential that you do your research on both the country and the company you are applying to. What is the business culture like in your host country? What are common interview questions asked in that country? Proper research will help you prepare specific and thoughtful answers to questions about why you want to intern abroad and how your skills will contribute to the company.
2. Practice, practice, practice.
   Once you have a firm understanding of the company and the country’s business customs, it is time to start practicing for your interview! In addition to rehearing your responses to common questions, make sure to also practice your body language and tone. Remember, in some cultures, direct eye contact during an interview can come across as confrontational or aggressive. Instead, try maintaining eye contact for 50% of the time during the conversation.
3. Dress for success.
   First impressions matter, especially in a job interview. Depending on the sector you are applying to, consider dressing formally for your interview. For example, if you are applying for a position in a bank or another finance-related field, it is advisable to wear a suit. On the other hand, if you are interviewing for a position in a more creative field such as marketing or public relations, you may have more leeway in terms of dress code. The most important thing is that you feel confident and comfortable in what you are wearing so that you can focus on nailing the interview process!
4. Speak slowly and clearly—and don’t forget to smile!
   Since English may not be the interviewer’s first language—or yours!—it is important to speak slowly and enunciate clearly throughout the conversation. This will help ensure that both parties understand each other and prevent any miscommunications. Also remember that a smile goes a long way in making a good impression; while maintaining eye contact during an interview is important, be careful not to stare down your interviewer as this might make them feel uncomfortable.
